Alright, I've just bought a 2003 635is and am having problems with the intake manifold assembly. It has been in the garage for over a year with the windshield still in. I pulled it out yesterday and decided to take a look. Unfortunately, there was a crack in the manifold, so I decided to open it up and give it a good cleaning and drying. I pulled off the front cover and noticed that the intake manifold itself seemed to be held in place by a large retaining ring. I took a picture to show you what I'm talking about: When I removed this ring, there was no problem. It was intact and there wasn't any damage to the manifold. But when I put the cover back on, the cover pushed up on the manifold. In other words, when the intake manifold was in the car, the retaining ring would hold the cover in place, but after the cover was removed, the ring no longer held it in place. It just pulled the cover away from the manifold. I have a feeling that I'm going to have to replace it with a smaller ring. Is it normal for the intake manifold to have this retaining ring?
