15th Jan 2012 - The Honourable Don McKinnon MP, Minister for Human Resource Development, Minister for Small Business and Innovation and Minister for Science has now received the findings of the review of International English Language Testing System (IELTS) conducted by Dr Bill Bowlby, University of Waterloo (UW) and Mr Inge Schmidt, University of St Andrews (UoA). Following the recommendations of the review, it is proposed that the IELTS is revised. The Government is now in the process of making the necessary arrangements for the revision of IELTS. 13th Jan 2012 - The Hon. Don McKinnon MP Minister for Human Resource Development, Minister for Small Business and Innovation and Minister for Science has released a statement in the media saying that the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) has been successfully used as a benchmark to assess the English language ability of international students for several years. 13th Jan 2012 - First class marks will soon be available for high schools in Gampaha district after a change of policy from the District Secretariat (DS). The DS had earlier said that Class One and Class Two marks would not be issued to schools in the Gampaha district. However, the DS has now issued instructions to all schools to provide 1st, 2nd and 3rd class marks. As a result, many schools will now release the marks for the recent examinations. 13th Jan 2012 - International students will soon be able to take their SLC (Second Language Competence) exams in Sinhala, Tamil and vernacular languages. This has been suggested by the IELTS. To register the language exam candidates must bring SLC mark sheet for the IELTS exam as well as SLC language-specific certificates (if available) for those who have qualified in other than English. The IELTS examiners will have the option to include vernacular language subjects in their IELTS exam. 13th Jan 2012 - A number of business organisations have called on the Government to set aside Rs.20 million to ensure that the provision of accommodation and other facilities for students and workers on Sri Lankan-registered vessels in foreign ports is ensured. 13th Jan 2012 - The U.S. embassy has officially recognized the University of Waterloo and University of St Andrews as ‘key partners’ in the United States.
